Assuming you get stuck helping your friends and family out with their new PCs, give the following website a go :-
http://ninite.com/
It basically lets you select all the software you may want to install on a virgin PC and then creates a unattended installer that will download and install it for you.
You can even choose the standard apps yourself and just email them a link that would download the pre-defined installer.
Works nicely.
