Correct...unfortunately Amazon also states:-
Price: £294.95
which is a bit too much of a premium for something that I quite fancy but am not really desperate for.
And the clover one states High demand and limited supply from ASUS make lead times difficult to predict which is also a bit too uncertain...good price though - also it is white, which I would buy if it was there in front of me, but I would prefer black so if I am going to wait I will hang on for a black.
...apparently there is a new model out in a month or so with the Merom chipset which should mean it runs longer on the same battery power as it is more efficient. |

I don't know I think the Merom chipset just consumes less power...I read rumours of a 9" or 10" model but then the price probably goes up to something nearer £300 which isn't so appealing.
I like the diddiness of the 7" one - I was going to buy a little 7" portable DVD player for when I am flying etc anyway so the computer seems to make a lot of sense - although it is probably £130 more than the DVD player.
I noticed in PC World that Packard Bell do a similar sized thing but it has a more powerful CPU in but is nearly £400. |

Mine is a white 4G variant.
Wij - I've not put XP on yet
Might try at some point - but I got it mainly for surfing and DivX videos - they look great on the 7" 800*480 screen.
If u can wait 2 weeks, I can bring it to the LAN party so everyone can have a look.... |

To install XP I'll need to borrow an external USB optical drive..........if someone can bring one to the LAN party, I don't mind XP being put on as a demo. Will also need a valid version of XP! (my licenses are all in use!)
There's a Linux recovery disc in the box - together with all the required XP drivers, so there's no risk involved (I hope!)
Then Wij can visit the toilet with it and test D2 whilst defacating,
Nice. |

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed and it is all running okay.
A couple of problems getting the network running, fixed by switching back to "Let Windows control this connection", and the sound did not work until some manual driver intervention, but overall pretty impressive.
I have 1.2GB of space on my internal solid state HD left after the install and some basic programs. Videos play beautifully although I haven't tried any games yet. It takes around 45-60 seconds from power on to desktop showing, so not as quick as the linux that comes pre-installed.
I will bring it to BobLAN so you can have a play. |

I have also upgraded the RAM to 2GB. It didn't really need it, but it was only £30 for the stick and it just goes in the trapdoor underneath like on a larger laptop. |

The new Acer ultra-portable looks really really nice
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/03/acer_launches_one/
The Linux version is only £199 and has an 8.9" screen. No real HD but 8GB solid state and space for SD cards is more than adequate, and means much longer battery life it seems. The XP version costs £299 and has a 80GB HD in it.
If I was buying one today I think that is what I would go for. I wonder if the Windows drivers are available so you can get the Linux version and then install XP on it? |
