Well I've had the shuttle for 3 years now, so when i discovered the replacement graphics card wouldn't fit, a full upgrade had to be the way Smile

Been enjoying learning about current generation kit again, thought I'd post where I've got to for any feedback anyone cares to offer Smile

The goal is quiet, but good enough to play games reasonably.

Ta folks Very Happy

Case
Lian-Li PC-B25B
http://www.xcase.co.uk/p/465437/lian-li-b25-blue-ring-black-no-psu.html - 109

might be dodgy on shipping, this is the uk disti and they're quoting mid march, so might need to choose another.

PSU
Nesteq ASM 520W - 99.01
http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/psus-601-1000/nesteq-psus

think 520W will be fine with the kit below? Could get the 620W if I could find it in stock

Motherboard
Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-253-AS&tool=3 - 152

Pondered this one a while, DDR3 seems pointlessly expensive for little current gain, not overfussed about massive upgrade paths, will just buy a new motherboard when X48/P45 bed in and I need one Smile Thought about P35, but this X38 wasn't much more, so for the minor enhancements thought it worth it Smile

CPU
E8400 Core2 Duo 45nm 3GHz
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=4YCZ 130.91

nice and cool, should clock up to nearing 4Ghz if I really need to Smile

CPU cooler
http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/ultragrade/ninjaplus - 33

RAM
4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 PC2-8500 (1066), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-15, EPP, DHX TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=782925 - 91

HD
Western Digital Caviar RE2-GP 1TB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD1000FYPS)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-182-WD - 132

The rest made up from existing kit, including the 8800GT that kicked it all off Smile Very Happy

Nice kit ! I'll chuck in a couple of alternatives, if you fancy saving a bit of dosh;

Case
Antec 900 - 70
http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=9524&category_id=54&manufacturer_id=0

The Lian-Li looks nicer, but the Antec case is excellent for cooling, a solid gaming choice

PSU
Corsair 520W - 72
http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=10210&category_id=263&manufacturer_id=0&tid=cmpsu-520hxuk

Modular, and although branded Corsair is made (I believe) by Seasonic, meaning it's efficient and quiet too

RAM
Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 - 35
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-090-CR&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813

Great RAM that will overclock close to 1066 speeds / timings for less than half the price

Enjoy your new machine Smile

I've just got the 9600 (along with Lynx).

It's spot on. Crysis plays on high settings 1280x1024 quite happily (although didn't try the very high as I'd have had to fiddle in the settings for that and I didn't have chance). Haven't tried much else with it but I can report it is very very quiet in comparison to my 7600GT (you can't even hear the fan speed up when it's under load).

Oh and CS looks about the same but just for fun I turned everything it was possible to right up (whatever that 16xAA quintuplex thingumy does). And then it looked just about the same. As I got shot. Again. And again. And again. May need to practice a bit before the lan!

PS, I'm officially starting a book on Pup breaking the change freeze when all this sort of mayhem is going on around him. I'm not sure but I think trying XFire with Lynx's cards on Friday night may count.

I am not doing anything other than putting a new bigger HD in my BobLAN machine. If I am able to I will just bung it in as a slave but I'm not sure there are are spare SATA ports so I may have to swap out my existing drive.

With this in mind, is there any reason to install Vista? i.e. do any of the games we will be playing demand Vista? If not I would rather stick with XP.

Stick with XP. Vista is ok, but nobody here has the hardware to run anything in full DX10 glory. I get the feeling that Windows 7 will bypass Vista, making Vista the Windows ME of the day. There are no compelling reasons to upgrade right now.

Got the Sparkle one from CCL.

I'm running it on XP and I've seen there are a few hacks for Crysis to get the dx10 very high settings (haven't tried it myself though).

I'm also sticking with XP. I've got vista on my laptop but it's not much cop.

I have Vista on my gaming machine, but it's essentially a waste of time because DX10 performance is so poor I end up switching it off anyway, and that's with a Core2Quad and an 8800GT. No reason to upgrade from XP I wouldn't say ...
