Just to let everyone know, Evil Twin are closing their CS:Source server to concentrate on TF2. Their TF2 server details are available on our Friday Night page - http://www.desertfoxclan.com/tools/friday.php

A big thanks to Simon at Evil Twin for letting us use their CS server over the past year or so Smile

Sad

I was talking to Pup about this the other day to see if we could drum up some support for chipping some money in to keep it going. I wonder if they would resurrect it if we went halves or something????

We'd need to know how much it is for a start. A dedicated server port will be in the region of £30-40 a month. Given that the only people playing on it regularly enough to want to pay anything are you, me, Bob and Pup, then it would work out quite steep each.

DFC itself isn't actually making any money right now. Hosting is costing me around £8 a month for the two websites, domain name and mailbox (anyone is welcome to have a @desertfoxclan.com email address if they like) yet the affiliates stuff brings in sod all. I don't think we had any payouts last year, and one £30 payout the year before. So we can't really use the affiliate money for helping ET out with their server.

I'm open to suggestions tho, as I know we're all gutted that their CS server has ceased.

Yeah, I was thinking that if it was something like 30 quid and they were happy to go halves to keep it going then 15 quid between the four of us would be no bother.

What do you think? There's mention of it being around 25 quid on the forums which would work out at 4 quid each a month (assuming halving).

Personally, I'd be happy to pay a small amount a month to keep it going. But if we do, then what about the various other clans that regularly use it, eg <OG> ?

See what George thinks. I could talk to Simon (Extreme_One - their server admin) if you like. We'd need commitment from the four of us tho, and a maximium amount we'd be prepared to spend a month.

Spoke to George, he thought it was a workable idea and Lynx seems keenish. George thinks it's about 25 quid a month but the price changes based on number of slots.

Let me know what Simon thinks. Maybe it's non-starter for them!

I've spoken to Simon and it's a no go. There's nobody at ET who wants to continue paying anything for a CS server as they are now wholly TF2.

We currently have two options:

1) Take Gaz up on his offer to host a server
2) Source a server from a hosting company. Thanks for the info there Bean.

I'll do a bit of asking round as to which providers are good, which are bad etc. Obviously BarrysWorld is the best, but it doesn't exist anymore Sad

More to follow...

My new connection is 16MB downstream and 1MB upstream - which is quite large for ADSL. How many users would that support?

I wouldn't mind having a scheduled job to run a CS:Source server for you chaps every Friday night, so long as you don't mind it occasionally being a bit ropey if anyone else in the house is using the connection. I have an XP machine sitting there always on anyway.

Simon at Evil Twin recommended this lot:

http://www.teamhost.co.uk/

They offer a 24hr free trial, so we could try to time that for a Friday when a few of us will be around.

The 16 slot server at £15.84 per month is about right for our needs. HLStatsX is extra.

It's the upstream (and RAM) that's important I think. . . from a quick nosey around on the web, the requirements for a 16 player server seem to be 768Kbps upstream and 1Gb of free RAM (although if the connection is in use at the same time by other non-CS users it'll obviously affect things adversely). More info here;

http://www.cstrike-planet.com/tutorial/1

If you decide to go down the dedicated server route I'd be happy to chip in a small amount each month for it's upkeep ... I'm missing playing on ET already.

Monty.

Very Happy dfc.lodgey.com is alive Very Happy

Thanks to some googling & great help from Mesmer I should have a server up by Friday.
I just need to spend some time opening [QUITE A FEW] ports up tomorrow!

UDP 1200 (Friends Network)
UDP 27000 to 27015 (Gameport)
UDP 27020
TCP 27030 to 27039
TCP 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

Found a great guide here if anyone else fancies setting a server up.
http://planethalflife.gamespy.com/View.php?view=HL2Guides.Detail&id=4&game=3

With more or less all of 4mb out this should do the trick nicely!
Should I run it at 33 ticks?

Mes - hurry up with the config files Rolling Eyes
