Well I wasn't gonna bother..........

But what the hell. Blu-ray movie playback and Motorstorm seemed like good enough reasons to take the plunge. (There's not a great deal else TBH)
I also ordered VF5, and a few movies.

I'll be picking up my PS3 at midnight on Thursday from Gamestation Halifax Razz

Anyone else pre-ordered?

Scarily most shops still seems to be taking pre-orders for guaranteed delivery on Friday Surprised
Massively underwhelming demand for the PS3 then.........cost and timimg probably to blame. Or a general anti-Sony feeling everywhere!

Not at 425

Maybe at 300 I may be tempted.

Not a chance I'd pay that kinda price for it, especially considering they've nerfed it for europe and theres no backwards compatibility.

Hopefully getting my Wii today tho \o/

Wii Sports - Fantastic
Rayman Raving Rabids - Ok
WarioWare - Good
Zelda - Incredibly overhyped by the fan boys...boring
FarCry - not even bothered to open it

There really is naff-all to buy for Wii (unless you like paying 5 a go for 20 year old games on the virtual console).

Got my Wii on launch day - and hardly played it TBH
Monkey Ball is nice - Wii Sports/Play are OK for a laugh.....but they're all very gimmicky and party-like. Haven't even played Zelda yet Confused
Went down a storm at the Chrimbo party though - especially Wii Tennis Smile

As for PS3 - the Blu-Ray player is worth 425- alone! The bonus is the fact that the PS3 also plays games Wink
MotorStorm looks stunning - and is probably the only AAA title. But my main reason for purchase was for more HD movies.
Got Casino Royale and a few others on their way......

As for backwards compatibility.......

I was initially shocked about Sony removing the Emotion Engine (c) from the PS3, and deciding to rely on software emulation.
Then I stopped and realised:
A - I'll be keeping my PS2 and PS1 anyway 'cos they're worth all of 1.86 - so can play all my existing games glitch free anyway
B - Exactly the same happened to the X-Box when the 360 went down the s/w emulation path - and no-one seemed to care then
C - The actual list of emulated PS2 games on the PS3 is actually pretty good - with a few small exceptions - see here:
http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/
Not a big deal really in the grand scheme of things.

As for the price:
I paid 400- for a Sega Saturn in 1995.
The 3DO was 699- in 1993.
The PS3 is Wi-fi, bluetooth and Gigabit LAN ready (with internet browser) - and is a dedicated (high quality according to the reviews I've seen) Blu-Ray HD movie machine - and is being made at a considerable loss by Sony.
I am quite anti-Sony.....and the 360 is my main gaming machine - but the price certainly isn't an issue in purchase, 'cos you definitely get what you pay for Very Happy

When real, cutting edge, games start to show what the Cell machine can do...........then you'll join the fold (maybe) Smile

Now now Gren...don't be confusing "worth" with "currently costs". You'll not be saying a Blu-Ray player is worth 425 in 2 years when they are 125 from ASDA.

Considering you can get a DVD player for under 20 these days 425 is a lot of money to watch films - especially as I don't have a HDTV! Very Happy

If I had a HDTV I probably would buy the xbox HD-DVD add-on thing just because it is priced right.

Anyway....bring the PS3 along to BobLAN - I do fancy having a look...maybe it will change my mind about buying one.

I think the issue is that Sony laughed at Microsoft for only supporting a limited title set and banged on about how they would be 99.9% BC...so for them not to be is quite funny. I agree though that it ain't generally huge deal - you buy your powerful new machine to play gorgeous new games...and maybe run a Linux media center.

Sony also waffled on about how rumble was so last-gen....now they have sorted out their legal woes though rumble is suddenly this-gen again. Smile

I actually agree Very Happy

I chuckled when Sony introduced the new PAL non-hardware compatible PS2 emulation!
I also grinned when I saw the lack of rumble Wink

Sony certainly ain't my favourite company. Indeed I wasn't even thinking of buying a PS3 until November or so......although that was partly down to the fact that I thought I wouldn't be able to buy one until then! Massive demand and pre-order craziness etc...

But recently, with my X-Box 360 HD-DVD drive being left in the dust thanks to the advance of Blu-Ray movies taking over in the US - and the positive reviews of a few key titles (well MotorStorm R:FOM and VF5) - and a nice HBOS bonus - I thought:

Gotta justify the reason for buying a new 1080P projector to watch movies on Razz

And stand-alone Blu-Ray HD players are still 600-700 upwards.........

PS3 Update:
Very nice Smile Slick and shiny, and actually bigger and heavier than the 360 Shocked
Extremely well built though (should be at that price), and not too noisy.

Front end has a very slick interface - almost identical to that of the PSP.
Simple to setup audio/video/wi-fi network out of the box......was logged into the Playstation network pretty quickly (after the 1st system patch!). It's very similar to XBox Live marketplace, with videos, demos and games to buy.
One great freebie though - Gran Turismo HD. Wasn't sure that it would be launched in the UK, but it's there and it's pretty gob-smacking visually. But plays just like the other GT games - i.e. it's a bit clinical and sterile for me Laughing
S/W:
R:FoM - Good FPS, neat graphics and levels, and controls feel pretty good. Not an earth-shattering title by any means, but not bad as a launch title.
MotorStorm - Awesome. This is the show-off title. Plays a little like MotorCross Madness, but with other vehicle types. And the chuffing visuals are stunning. Most importantly it feels great, and it has that perfect arcade/simulation mix that so many racing games get wrong. Think Sega Rally but with more air-time and crashes Wink
VF5 - Brilliant. One of my faves from yesteryear - VF2 on the Saturn is still the best balanced 3D fighter, and this is almost like a next-gen update of that. Vastly superior to the likes of Tekken and DoA Razz

If anyone gets a PS3 - add me as a "friend" - df-grendel.

Cya online soon.......

Tried it at BobLAN...Motorstorm looks pretty. Everything else is on x360 and looks the same as PS3 version. Definitely not buying one...it isn't compelling enough until it hits nearer 200.

I meant to say, unless I buy a 1080p TV and therefore need to justify that purchase by spending money on high-def movies.

I already have the Xbox HD-DVD player but more stuff comes out on Blu-Ray so I splashed on the PS3 as it is currently the cheapest Blu-Ray player at 400 (including extra controller, +2 Game, +1 Film; but without hd cable at extra 20).

Picture looks great. I have to say though that the Xbox is a better dashboard if you have multiple users on the console with parental controls etc. Dunno what the games are like - not bothered loading them yet, it really is intended to be a Blu-Ray player.

Just said I wouldn't buy one till it was nearer 200...which it is - by 25 Smile

I stand by my comments that it is nothing special. It is just the cheapest BluRay player at the moment...If I could have got a stand alone BluRay player cheaper I would have done.

It plays the movies lovely...the games are completely arse though.
