Gaz has finished setting up the base CS server. I've had it added to our DNS, so you can get to it via cs.desertfoxclan.com:27015. There's also a launch link on http://www.desertfoxclan.com/tools/friday.php.

The plan is to install mods over the next week or two, starting with SourceMod - the replacement admin mod to Mani. I'll also install EventScripts to support things like GunGame, and MetaMod with VIP. The LAN server will need SourceMod installing, so this will be good practice.

Thanks for the work on the server Gaz - much appreciated.

I'll be around tomorrow night if anyone fancies a game, and I reckon we should take the password off it in the hope that random players come on to boost numbers.

Sadly CS drops with an "Engine Error" dialog (failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer) - both Steam and CS are up to date and I can successfullyu host my own games just not access ones on the shiny new DFC server Crying or Very sad

Why? I thought this was meant to be a DFC server?
I'm a little cautious about making it a free for all server.
Won't it get abused?

By all means let all trusted parties aware of the password but I'm not sure I want to make it available to all?

What is your reasoning behind this madness Razz

You should be able to make it so that people get kicked if DFCs come on. I don't know if people in the know would need to know the password. To be fair I can let Monty know the password though!

You protect your server Gaz.

I would let Evil Twin have the details so they can use it but other than that keep it locked down.

It could do with a few more bots on it...last time I had a go it was a massive map and there were only 2 bots making up the opposing team.

The reason I asked for the password to be removed is one of critical mass. Nobody wants to play on a server with just bots. If we let some public on, at least you get some humans to play against.

Daz is right - with SourceMod or Mani, you can have reserved slots. You just add your nick or SteamID to an admins file and if the server is full, someone will be kicked to make way for you.

This is what we found with the old subscription Game.net product - low initial take-up meant that the servers remained empty, which meant that ppl going on had nobody to play against, meaning they never bothered renewing.

And what can they do to compromise the server? Your ports are already open to all, so whether they get password-blocked or not makes little difference. Unless someone has rcon, they can't do any harm to the server.

The alternative, as has previously been suggested, is to let quite a few ppl know the password. That'd include ne1 we know who'd want to use it, plus selected clans (eg ET, KM, TAT and perhaps one or two other old ET server regulars)

It's nothing to do with compromising the server Smile

That connection costs around 30k / year. I am allowing DFC &FO to use it so it doesn't eat too much bandwidth.

I had no idea you wanted it to be a free for all server......

Go ahead & give the password to any freindly clans but I don't want to remove the password.
